According to a Harris Interactive survey, businesses with dirty floors turn off customers 86% of the time.
The businesses surveyed were as varied as restaurants, offices of lawyers, realtors, CPA’s, automobile dealerships, hotels, motels and small businesses.
Simply put, if the first thing a potential customer/client is greeted with when they enter your business is dirty floors (carpeting and tile) and upholstery, you’re potentially asking them to take their hard-earned dollars elsewhere.
Ask yourself, would you eat at a restaurant with filthy floors, booths or chairs? What does it say about your attorney or CPA if they won’t invest in keeping their office furniture drool and stain free? What impression does the realty company make when they’re hoping you’ll choose them for one of the largest purchases you’ll probably make in your life yet they won’t invest a couple hundred dollars in keeping their lounge area fresh and clean.
Sometimes business put too much emphasis on their “bottom line” and think they’re saving a dollar or two by not investing in keeping their facilities clean. Many forget that without clients, they have no business. Many also believe that “a carpet cleaner is a carpet cleaner” so they choose to hire the cheapest they can find.
What many businesses don’t understand is that quality cleaning solutions, coupled with powerful cleaning equipment and experienced-certified technicians, will deliver a cleaning that will last longer and make them look good. Too often, “budget cleaners” use cheap cleaning solutions (some even use laundry detergent that leave behind residue), antiquated cleaning equipment, employees who are not experienced or back ground checked and no insurance to undercut legitimate cleaning companies to land an account. The problem with these cleaners is that the end result of their “cleaning” will not last due to left behind residues and spots that will continue to attract dirt.
How do dirty carpets and upholstery affect your business?
- Harms employee health: Dust, dirt, bacteria, food and drink spills, and even viruses can get trapped in carpeting, leading to fever, headaches, and colds. And as employees and customers mill around, they push these allergens deeper and deeper into the carpets, making them harder to remove with traditional vacuuming. In addition, mold spores can grow quickly on dirty carpets, leading to allergic reactions in some people.
- Spreads unpleasant odors: Who hasn’t eaten lunch at their desk? While there’s nothing wrong with eating a sandwich as you work, those food crumbs will inevitably fall into the carpet. Combine those food particles with spilled coffee, soda, or juice, and your carpet is bound to start smelling funky as bacteria start going to work on all that yummy food! Now, think about what happens at restaurants.
- Affects your reputation: If a customer or client visits your office, you only have one chance to make a great first impression. And there’s nothing like a coffee stain, dirty carpeting, or upholstery to ruin it for you.
- Increases damage to the carpet: The accumulation of dirt, dust, food, and bacteria will reduce the lifespan of your carpet, costing you more money when you need to buy replacements more often than usual. A damaged carpet also starts a vicious cycle: the more damage it has, the more dirt it will trap.
Your carpet at work is no different than your carpet at home. They both act like filters, trapping dirt and grime. But, for some reason, we don’t worry as much about workplace carpets as we do about our home carpets even though we actually spend more active time in the workplace.
There is a common misconception that because there are no pets or kids at work, our office carpets won’t be as dirty.
The reality is that we spend 40 hours or more each week at our businesses, and a dirty carpet can have a huge impact on our productivity, health, and happiness not to mention what it says about our business to potential customers.
