Travertine, Marble and Granite Flooring Care in SW Florida

Beautiful Travertine Floor – Before and After Cleaning

Natural stone countertops are beautiful, luxurious, and if cared for properly will last a lifetime.  Our tile and grout cleaning professionals are experts in the cleaning and repair of travertine, granite, limestone and other natural stone surfaces and are often asked for advice on how to care for them.

Weekly we will post some of the more frequently asked questions along with an answer to help you make informed decisions on the best care practices for your natural stone surfaces.

Question:  Do I need to have my granite countertops sealed? I have heard so many conflicting answers.

Answer:  There is a straightforward way to tell if your granite, marble or limestone countertops or floors need to be sealed. Take a drop of water and place it on the stone. Wait about two minutes and blot up the water. If the water left a dark mark, indicating that the stone absorbed the water, it must be sealed.

Do keep in mind, however, that sealing a stone is done to give you more time to clean up a spill, so staining agents are less likely to be absorbed. Sealing will not protect the surface of calcite based (e.g., marble, limestone, travertine, onyx, and some granite) countertops from damage caused by acidic liquids. So, even though your countertops are sealed, you will still want to take care to use coasters and avoid acid based cleaners.

Want A Quality Carpet Cleaning – Choose The Right Carpet Cleaning Company.

A Quality Carpet, Tile or Upholstery Cleaning Begins With The Right “Science”

In order to be really good at a job, a person must first understand the fundamentals of that profession.  That ’s why Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care puts so much emphasis on training.

Did you know that carpet cleaning is a profession based on scientific principles of chemistry and physics?  It ’s true.  The ability to effectively clean anything—not just carpet—requires an understanding of the four basic principles of soil suspension; chemical action, heat, agitation and time.  We remember these fundamentals by the acronym CHAT.

The first of the fundamentals is chemical action.  Water is used for cleaning because of how it reacts with many soils.  In fact, water does most of the work in cleaning.  However, water alone is not very effective on oily or greasy soils.  We need specialty cleaning agents to dissolve some of the more difficult soils like food, grease and petroleum oils found in things like makeup, shoe polish, and ink.  These soils would be difficult or impossible to remove with plain water.

It ’s amazing how little of these cleaning agents we need to get great results.  When we dilute our products, we are actually using about 99.9% water!  If you find this hard to believe, consider how much bubble bath you need to make a whole tub full of suds.  It’s not much, is it?  Similarly, we use just enough cleaning solution to break down soils and no more.  This assures that we leave no unwanted residue.

Many uneducated cleaners subscribe to the “more is better”  mentality, so they overuse cheap, harsh detergents and leave a residue.  This is one reason why carpets get dirty quickly after untrained carpet cleaners do the job.

The second principle of soil suspension is heat.  Heat helps cleaning agents work better and faster.  Applying a heated cleaning solution makes cleaning more efficient, so we use less detergent.  Heat also helps liquefy oily, greasy and sticky soils, suspending them into the cleaning solution for effective removal.

Agitation is the third principle of soil suspension.  It makes cleaning more efficient by helping distribute cleaning agents for better penetration.  By agitating the cleaning solution into your carpet, we CHAT it out suspend soils and lift matted carpet yarns for better cleaning.

Time is the fourth principle of cleaning and soils suspension.  This is one area where many carpet cleaners drop the ball.  In order for a cleaning agent to work well, it needs “dwell time” to penetrate into the carpet yarns and break down stubborn soils.  When untrained cleaners rush this process, cleaning results suffer.  We make sure we allow the product to work so soils are completely dissolved for removal.

All of this is why after Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care is invited into your home, you can expect fluffy, fresh-smelling carpets that stay cleaner longer.  Once the carpets are completely cleaned, we can apply a carpet protector to help prevent stains and maintain that fresh, clean look even longer.

Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care is a Certified Partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  In addition, we are A+ rated by the Better Business Bureau and a five-year-in-a-row-winner of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.

All carpet, tile, and upholstery cleaning companies are not the same.  A carpet cleaner who is experienced, certified and backed by leading edge cleaning solutions and technologies will deliver a better – longer lasting cleaning than a coupon, uncertified, and uneducated carpet cleaner.

When Is The Last Time You Had Your Dryer Vent Cleaned?

Four Year’s Worth Of Lint Accumulation In Dryer Vent

For many households, the clothes dryer is an indispensable convenience and necessity. However, damaging fires can occur if clothes dryers and their venting are not properly maintained.

Annually over 15,500 house fires are caused by clogged clothes dryer vents resulting in approximately 35 deaths, 425 injuries and over $205 million in property damage.  A family’s dreams and memories can be destroyed in minutes.

The How’s and Whys of a Clothes Dryer Fire

A clothes dryer works by forcing hot air through a turning drum. Wet clothes placed in the drum are then dried by moving hot air. It is possible for a full load of wet clothes to contain as much as one and a half gallons of water.

Lint, consisting mostly of small fibers from the clothes and debris in or on the clothes, is created from the clothes as the clothes tumble in the drum. While much of the lint is trapped by the dryer’s filter, lint is also carried through the vent system along with moist air.

Lint is a highly combustible material that can accumulate both in the dryer and in the dryer vent.

Accumulated lint leads to reduced airflow and can pose a potential fire hazard.  In addition to the accumulation of lint, blockage in dryer exhaust vents also can occur from the nests of small birds or other animals or from damages to the venting system itself.

A compromised vent will not exhaust properly to the outside. As a result, overheating may occur, and a fire may ensue.

How To Tell If Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning

  • Your dryer takes an unusually long time to dry your clothes. Even after multiple cycles, clothes may still be damp. If there isn’t anything wrong with the dryer, this can be a sign that the dryer vents need to be cleaned.
  • At the end of the dryer cycle, your clothes are very hot. This can be because the hot air that the dryer produces isn’t able to escape properly due to clogged vents.
  • The outside, especially the top, of the dryer is very hot. This is often because the dryer is working too hard, trying to push air through vents that are clogged with lint.
  • The dampers or flappers of the exhaust termination don’t open or barely open when the dryer is running. This can be because air is not traveling at all or very poorly through the vents.
  • The laundry room starts to feel very warm or humid when the dryer is in use. The hot, damp air can’t escape through the vents, so it lingers in the laundry room.
  • Moisture stains occur along the path of the dryer vent and exhaust. This can indicate that hot, moist air is escaping through the venting system, often because it’s being blocked by excessive lint.
  • You may notice excessive dust in the laundry room. This is because lint is getting backed up in the dryer vents and then blown back into the laundry room.
  • The dryer may stop before the dry cycle is finished because it can’t properly vent the hot air or the unit itself gets overheated. Clogged vents contribute to this.
  • A burnt smell in the laundry room can indicate that lint is backed up. If you notice a burnt smell, you should have the dryer and dryer vents inspected right away, as this could cause a fire.

If you notice any of the warning signs or multiple signs, it is time to call the experts at Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care. We provide free inspections / free estimates and reliable service to ensure that your dryer and venting system are working properly.

It should also be noted that a clean dryer vent system will help reduce electric costs (dryer will not require multiple cycles) and extend the life of your dryer.

Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care is a Certified Partner with the prestigious Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  In addition, we are A+ Rated with the Better Business Bureau and a five-year-in-a-row-winner of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award.

Dryer vent fires are preventable.  If your clothes are taking more than one cycle to dry or you’re experiencing any of the warning signs mentioned earlier, it’s time to have your dryer vent cleaned.

What Is That Haze On My Tile Floor?

Grout Haze On Newly Installed Tile Floor

Monthly Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care receives calls from homeowners complaining that their freshly installed tile flooring has a “haze” on it that can not be removed even with the most aggressive mopping.  In many cases, these are brand new homes and in other instances, the homeowner had a tile floor installed and a couple days after installation a white haze appeared.

This white haze is called “efflorescence”.

Efflorescence (which means “to flower out” in French) is the dissolved salts and other minerals deposited on the surface of tile that becomes visible after the evaporation of water that was used when the grout mortar was mixed by the installer.  Basically, when a tile is laid to create flooring, grout (mortar) is mixed by the installer and used to fill the gaps in the tile to hold the textile in place.  When the installer fills in the grout lines, he wipes the excess grout with a sponge and the salts and minerals of the grout are now smeared across the tile where it dried and turns into efflorescence. Once deposited, efflorescence appears as a haze across the surface of your flooring and becomes impossible to remove without professional help.

Since 2007, Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care has been the “cleaner of choice” to many of our areas leading contractors, floor covering specialists, interior designers, builders, and homeowners when it comes to the removal of grout haze and efflorescence.

Our specialty process begins with a thorough inspection of the tile flooring to determine the extent of efflorescence damage.  We then custom blend a solution of surfactants and emulsifiers charged with hydrogen peroxide and a light acid chain binder.  This solution is applied to the tile flooring where each grout line is worked by hand.  After sufficient dwell time, a specialty tool is connected to our truckmount and the tile is safely rinsed using over 800lbs of agitation at 245 degrees.  The end result is fresh-clean tile and grout with no hazing.

For all of your tile and grout cleaning needs, you can depend on Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care’s restorative cleaning process to leave them looking their best.

Carpet Cleaning Contractors To Avoid In SW Florida

Who Are You Inviting Into Your Home?

Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care would like to remind consumers that there are thousands of carpet, tile, and upholstery cleaning companies located throughout Florida. Some deliver quality results but sadly, many do not.

How do you choose a quality company who will do what they say they’re going to do?  When it comes to online reviews, be very wary.

Many “positive” reviews are merely posts by friends, employees, and relatives of the company owner and posted to give a false impression of quality and service to deceive prospective clients. On the “negative” side, posts can be put up by disgruntled ex-employees or industry competitors who have never used a company’s services but try to discredit it with libelous or defamatory statements. This is a growing problem for Google, Yelp, Yahoo and other review sites.

Delivering high-quality results that others cannot match can lead to jealousy and underhand responses from less efficient companies.

Nowadays, anyone can create a “fake” e-mail address using any of the major search engines e-mail services and then post a review, positive or negative.  There is no oversight by the major search engines, no verification as to the accuracy of the post or reviewer, nothing.  On the other hand, reviews found on the Better Business Bureau or Angie’s List website are thoroughly vetted, and these websites have mechanisms in place to bounce “fake reviews.”  The BBB and Angie’s List will also assign a live interviewer to investigate challenged negative reviews and weed out “fake” reviews by unscrupulous sources.

The safest way to choose a quality carpet and upholstery cleaning company is to research the company thoroughly. Firstly, check out their reviews on Angie’s List, the Better Business Bureau’s free online services or ask your friends and family for recommendations.

Secondly, when narrowing your search for a quality company, verify if they have General Liability and Workers Compensation Insurance.  The company can easily provide you with proof and if they cannot on request then avoid them like the plague. If things go wrong, and one of their employees gets hurt at your home or if something is damaged or stolen, you’ll have no coverage.  An injured employee can sue YOU for medical expenses, loss of time from work, and of course, “pain and suffering.”  Moreover, what’s your recourse?  Sue the company who provided you with the service?  They can’t even afford insurance, what can you possibly expect out of them?

Next, verify that the company is certified by one of the national certification organizations such as The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) or the International Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI).  If they’re not certified, why not?  I’m not sure about you, but I wouldn’t let a non-certified mechanic, electrician or plumber perform work for me.

If they’re not certified, somethings wrong.  Could the company not pass the exams?  Are they not insured?  Do they have an unscrupulous background?  Are their employees and owners background checked?  To earn the certification of some organizations, the owners are background checked annually.

Finally, does the company give free, written estimates and an unconditional WRITTEN guarantee? If they don’t, tell them, “no thanks.”

We encourage all consumers to investigate any contractor invited into their home thoroughly.  Quality doesn’t cost more, and in fact, can extend the life of your textiles.

Dryer Vent Cleaning – Avoid Being One Of The 16,000 Annually

Fact:  Did you know that dryer vents are the Number One cause of all household fires? – Source, National Fire Protection Agency.

In fact, dryer vent fires are responsible for over 16,000 fires annually resulting in over $230 million in damages.

Dryer vent fires are caused by an ignition of built-up lint that spreads into the vent tubing leading through the walls of the home.  Lint is highly flammable and if not removed, is a fire waiting to happen.

Dryers are vented into the walls of our homes and can travel long distances with bends in the tubing.  These bends create additional places where lint can accumulate, and birds, mice, and other rodents can build nests if they can enter where the vent exits the roof.  Most people don’t give a second thought to dryer vents, even though this is the Number One place where a fire can start.

We Have The Solution For You

Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care offers a thoroughly exhaustive dryer vent cleaning service designed to deliver peace of mind to you and your family.

Our no-mess dryer vent service is state-of-the-art and includes:

  • A digital test to measure the airflow of your dryer vent before and after cleaning
  • The duct system is inspected with a video scope to look for blockage, damage to the venting and to evaluate the health of the system
  • We use a rotary system with high vacuum to clean the entire dryer duct system removing all lint, any rodent or bird nests, dryer sheets and any other obstructions
  • After cleaning, we inspect the dryer vent system a second time with a camera to ensure quality
  • We clean the dryer screen and under, behind and around the dryer
  • We introduce a hospital grade bactericide to the dryer vent to inhibit bacterial growth
  • The dryer vent transition hose is inspected for any leaks or crushing
  • The dryer is returned to its original place

How To Tell If Your Dryer Vent System Needs Cleaning

  • Your clothes take more than one cycle to dry
  • Your outside dryer “flapper” does not open or barely opens when the dryer is running
  • Burning or heat smell when you run the dryer
  • Your clothes have a musty odor after drying
  • Your dryer is very hot on the outside, or there is an accumulation of moisture in the room
  • You see lint coming out the outside of the vent opening
  • You’ve never had your dryer vent system cleaned and inspected

A thorough dryer vent cleaning takes about an hour, and the benefits are numerous.

  • You’ll significantly reduce the chance for dryer fires
  • Your clothes will dry more quickly and smell fresh and clean
  • Your electric bill will decrease due to less run time of your dryer
  • Your dryer will last longer and experience fewer repairs
  • Your clothes will last longer due to less heat exposure
  • You’ll reduce allergens due to no moisture issues related to clogged vents

A thoroughly exhaustive dryer vent cleaning will provide peace of mind, extend the life of your dryer and help reduce electric costs and should be performed every 18-24 months.

Cheap Carpet Cleaning – Be Careful Who You Invite Into Your Home.

How Well Do You Know That Contractor?

Carpet cleaning employee steals prescription medications from home.  https://cbs12.com/news/local/carpet-cleaner-admits-to-stealing-prescription-medicine-from-customers

Annually, tens of thousands of homeowners invite “strangers” into their home based on an advertisement or discount coupon found in their local newspaper.  Some of these strangers may be convicted child molesters, have domestic violence issues, are thieves or have ongoing drug issues that the courts currently, and in the past, have had to deal with.

Just because a contractor appears on television, radio or in a coupon book, or happens to have a presence on social media such as Facebook, doesn’t mean they or their employees are safe to invite into your home.  Yet yearly, many consumers, hundreds of thousands of times do without a second thought.

Imagine a stranger, a convicted child molester, rummaging through your daughter’s bedroom.  Alternatively, a contractor going through your medicine cabinets, closets or dresser drawers.

Many companies choose not to perform background checks on employees due to the expense, or they know employees with issues can be hired at a minimum hourly wage.

Other employers do not purchase Liability insurance or maintain Workers Compensation coverage for their employees.  In a scenario such as these, if an employee is injured on your property (they slip and fall, bang their head on something, etc.) the homeowner is liable for the cost of medical treatment, lost time from work, and of course, “pain and suffering.”  Sure, you can sue the contractor but what are you going to recover?  They can’t even afford insurance.

Our employees are background check twice annually, and we maintain Workers Compensation and General Liability Insurance with one of the nation’s largest insurers.

Background checks, General Liability, Workers Compensation Insurance and membership in national organizations offer clients peace of mind in knowing that anyone entering their home from Tru-Clean Carpet & Tile Care has been thoroughly vetted and insured.  We also perform random drug screens and conduct client surveys grading our staff on how well they performed for our valued clients.

Before inviting any contractor into your home, do your homework.  Just because they’re part of a franchise, are family owned, or offer a coupon doesn’t mean a hill of beans.

Ask for proof of insurance, check to see their status with the Better Business Bureau.  Check out their “verified” reviews from Angie’s List or the Better Business Bureau.  (Note:  Reviews posted on Yelp, Google, Yahoo, etc. are NOT verified, and anyone can post a fake review, good or bad).

Carpet Protector – Does It Work In SW Florida?

Is Your Carpeting Protected Against Spills and Soil “oops?”

Recently we interviewed an applicant from a local carpet cleaning company and during the interview we asked him to explain the value of carpet protector and how it works.

Imagine our shock and disgust when he told us that he had no idea if Scotchgard works or not because his current employer never applied Scotchgard, the technicians were told to ”spray the clients carpeting with water and they’ll think it’s Scotchgard.”  We promptly ended the interview and needless to say; he was not hired.

Wondering if this practice was prevalent in the industry, we contacted Scotchgard, and after being transferred several times, we were informed that sadly, they’d heard these same complaints.  Scotchgard works IF applied correctly.

Applied by reputable carpeting cleaning professionals, Scotchgard Protector has been trusted by consumers and carpet manufacturers for more than 50 years.  Safe AND effective, it helps carpet fibers resist soiling and makes spills easier to blot up.  It allows stains release more easily during cleaning and revitalizes carpet mill applied stain protection.

Scotchgard Protects Against Dirt, Stains, and Spills

  • Scotchgard helps protect against both oil and water-based stains
  • Helps carpet fibers resist soiling
  • Helps spills release before they become stains
  • Allows stains to release more efficiently during a professional carpet cleaning
  • Helps carpet and upholstery stay cleaner longer
  • Effective against fruit drinks, soft drinks, and frozen fruit treats
  • Vacuuming is more thorough because soils and pollen can’t easily stick to carpet fibers

The best time to apply Scotchgard is immediately after a professional cleaning.

We apply professional grade Scotchgard and offer a one-year guarantee.  Once applied, if you have an accident and spill one of the hundreds of water or oil based covered items, just use a few squirts of the spotter we supply directly to the spot and dab with a white paper towel.  If the spot does not release, simply call us.  We’ll send a technician to your home and remove the stain with our truck mounted equipment.  If the stain is permanent, we will refund the money you paid for protection for that room.  What could be fairer?
